Quick answer: batting strike rate is runs per 100 balls; average is runs per dismissal. In T20 the scarce resource is balls, not wickets, so strike rate usually carries more weight — but only when you compare batters doing the same job in the same phase, over a sample big enough to mean something.

Cricket conversation runs on numbers, and T20 conversation runs on two in particular: strike rate and average. Both are useful. Both are routinely misused — usually by comparing players who are doing completely different jobs. Batting Strike Rate

Strike rate = (runs ÷ balls faced) × 100. It answers a single question: how fast is this batter scoring? A knock of 40 from 25 balls is a strike rate of 160. A knock of 40 from 45 balls is roughly 89.

In a twenty-over innings a team has 120 balls and ten wickets. Wickets are rarely the binding constraint; balls always are. That asymmetry is the whole reason T20 privileges scoring speed — a batter who survives but consumes deliveries transfers pressure to whoever comes next.

The catch is that strike rate on its own says nothing about when the runs came. Twenty from ten balls against gentle bowling on a flat pitch is not the same achievement as twenty from ten against a death specialist defending eight.

Batting Average

Average = runs ÷ dismissals (not innings — not-outs are excluded from the denominator). It measures how many runs a batter typically produces before getting out.

In Test cricket average is close to sovereign. In T20 it is a supporting metric, and it has a well-known distortion: a finisher who is regularly not out can post a high average from short cameos. That does not make the average wrong, it makes it incomplete — which is exactly why it should never be read alone.

Bowling: Strike Rate vs Economy

Bowlers have their own pair. Bowling strike rate is balls per wicket — lower is better. Economy rate is runs conceded per over — lower is better too. In longer formats, wickets dominate. In T20, containment often matters as much, because a bowler who takes two wickets while conceding fifty has usually cost more than they gained.

Phase context is essential here. Death overs are expensive by nature; middle-overs spin is generally the cheapest work on the card. Comparing a death bowler’s economy to a middle-overs spinner’s is a category error, not analysis.

The Numbers That Add Real Context

  • Boundary percentage — share of runs from fours and sixes. Separates true power hitters from quick strike-rotators.
  • Dot-ball percentage — for batters, pressure absorbed or created; for bowlers, one of the strongest indicators of control.
  • Phase splits — performance in overs 1–6, 7–15 and 16–20. The single most useful breakdown in T20.
  • Matchup splits — record against pace versus spin, and against left-arm versus right-arm.
  • Balls per boundary — a cleaner measure of hitting frequency than strike rate alone.

The Small-Sample Trap

This is the mistake that produces the most confident nonsense online. T20 innings are short, so individual numbers swing violently. One innings of 60 from 22 balls can move a season strike rate by a large margin; two low scores can move it back. A player with eight innings has a number that is barely settled.

Whenever you see a stat quoted without a sample size — “averages 55 in T20s” — ask how many innings. If the answer is small, the figure is an early indication, not a fact about the player. A Four-Step Way to Read a Scorecard

  1. Establish the context. Ground, conditions, par score, whether the side batted first or chased.
  2. Identify the role. Where did the batter come in, and which overs were they batting through?
  3. Read runs and balls together. Never one without the other, and note the boundary count.
  4. Check the sample. Is this a career pattern, a season, or one night?
